Royal Marines
The Royal Marines are the light amphibious infantry and one of the five fighting arms of the Royal Navy. Founded on October 28th 1664 the Royal Marines are sometimes referred to as: Commandos, Bootnecks, Jollies and Royals.
Their motto is “per mare, per terram” which translates to “by sea, by land”.
With such a long and illustrious history it’s no surprise that the Royal Marines have fought and participated in a long list of conflicts and actions over the hundreds of years since their creation in 1664.
The Royal Marines have fought in the major conflicts which the UK has been involved in which, in recent years, includes the major military actions in Iraq and Afghanistan.
They are identifiable by their famous green berets and commando knife known as Fairbairn-Sykes.
The selection and training process is one of the most arduous in the British Military and perhaps explains why the Royal Marines are called upon by their country during times of conflict. They also have a close relationship with the special forces unit the SBS, Special Boat Service.
With such a long history and so many conflicts and battles to list which the Royal Marines have been involved in, below is just one which has become famous for its daring and audacity.
Affectionately known as “The Cockleshell Heroes” this action in world war two relates to Operation Frankton. With the lost of 8 marines due to capture and hypothermia, the remaining Marines damaged 6 vessels moored at the port.
